our roots
Hoku Seed Company has its roots in the medical cannabis community of Washington State. After graduating college in 2010, I got my medical card and quickly started growing a few plants for myself. In time, my garden grew until I was supplying other patients at the local farmers market. This path took me from growing indoors, using bottled nutrients and bagged soil, to recognizing the importance of sustainable agriculture and the pricelessness of clean medicine.
I now primarily grow in greenhouses, utilizing dry organic nutrients, compost teas, and no-till living soil beds. I am an advocate for organic cultivation and strive to keep things as simple and clean as possible. Over the years, I’ve combined the best practices of large scale agriculture with the balance and soul of regenerative farming. While I am forever learning, it was only after I honed my cultivation skills that I began to dive deep into the vast pool of hemp genetics and what they had to offer.
Initially, it was CBD rich genetics that really caught my attention. I had heard mention of a new cannabinoid; one that didn’t get you high, but offered a plethora of medical benefits. I began my search and soon stumbled upon clone only varieties like AC/DC, Harlequin, and Remedy. It was from this point that I began my relationship with CBD. After growing them out, I soon realized how much I enjoyed low thc genetics and began sharing them with others around me.
With these new CBD cuttings, I also started breeding. I crossed them with some of my favorite cannabis varieties and found that you could create mixed ratio hybrids with varying ratios of CBD:THC. Everything from balanced 1:1s to 30:1s, which is what we consider Hemp today. I also scoured the internet buying up any CBD rich genetics I could find. In doing so, it became an obsession. What once was a hobby turned into a never ending quest to create new hemp hybrids to share with others. With my passion for breeding CBD and the passage of the Farm Bill, I wasted no time in getting a Hemp License to pursue my goal of starting a seed company. In 2019, we became the 8th hemp farm in WA State to be licensed by the WSDA under the 2018 Farm Bill.
Fast forward to today. I have maintained my Hemp Licensing and continue to produce a wide variety of hemp seed for home growers and farmers alike. I’ve not only continued to work with CBD, but have focused heavily on CBG, as well as many other novel cannabinoids. You can now find our genetics all around the country as well as far away places like Australia, Europe, South America, and Asia.
